Connecticut planning fire training facility.

The state of Connecticut's first fire training academy is nearing completion in Windsor Locks, according to. the architectural firm responsible for designinlg the $17 million facility.

When completed in September, the five-building complex being developed on a 16-acre site adjacent to the Bradley International Airport will rank among the most advanced firefighter training facility in the country, reports Richard Foster, of Greenwich-based Richard Foster Associates.

Included in the various instructional and demonstration facilities, he adds, are a wide variety of environments covering a broad range of potential fire and safety situations.

A crescent-shaped main building will house 17 classrooms, 44 dormitory rooms, a teaching auditorium, state fire administration offices and a pool with a submerged automobile for the practice of under-water rescue techniques, according to Jeffrey J. Morrissette, State Fire Administrator. A high-tech, computer-controlled "burn building" will feature concrete rooms with steel walls and perforated steel furniture that can be set on fire with propane to simulate actual residential and industrial fires. Theatrical smoke will be used to create a mock fire scene.

Out-of-state firefighters and private industry trainees are expected to make the academy self-sustaining in three to five years, according to Jeffrey J. Morrissette, State Fire administrator.
