Connecticut Retired Police Officers HR 218 Certification.

New Milford, CT, September 24, 2012 --( Certification Available to Retired Law Enforcement Officers

Retired police and other qualifying law enforcement officers may carry their approved firearms nationally under The Law Enforcement Officers Safety Act of 2004 and the LEOS Improvement Act of 2010. The required training is offered by Herbert Furhman of HF LearnSafety Firearms Training Center, located at 280 Kent Road in New Milford, Connecticut.

Mr. Furhman, who is a retired Connecticut police officer and a certified police firearms instructor of the CT Police Academy, provides the firearms range qualification for retired officers of Connecticut agencies or those from non-CT agencies presently living in Connecticut. Furhman uses the CT P.O.S.T. course of fire and attendees bring their semi-automatics, revolvers or both to the range. After qualifying, Furhman will provide a wallet sized identification required under federal law. It is good for one year from the date of issue. Qualifications are conducted on demand throughout the week.

Carrying a firearm is not absolute for those with state pistol permits or the LEOSA certification. For example, Mr. Furhman said that you may only carry a firearm in approved locations and must strictly adhere to the laws of the state where you are. “In Connecticut you cannot bring your firearm into federal, state or municipal buildings. These include post offices, correctional facilities and public schools. Also any private property postings stating firearms are not allowed must be acknowledged and followed,” he concludes.

To find out if you qualify under the LEOSA Act, go to the Connecticut State Police website or the NRA Law Enforcement Division website. Those wishing to take the LEOSA firearms qualification course of fire should contact Furhman at 203-947-4327 or by email at
