Conman tapped into my name.

A Teesside plumber has considered changing his business name after a conman used it to rip off customers.

Ken Batkin, from Eston Grange, and a plumber for 46 years, has worked under the name Northern Water Services for 14 years.

Now the 61-year-old is concerned that a bogus plumber has been using his business name.

Mr Batkin heard about the incident in the Gazette, which reported a warning to homeowners from Stockton Council's Trading Standards officers last week.

The conman had reportedly told customers that European byelaws meant they were liable to hefty fines if they didn't have special fittings put on outdoor taps.

Ken said: "I was surprised to read about this and even considered taking the name off my van. It's concerning when something like this happens because it can damage your name.

"But I've been doing this for a long time and my customers know me so I'll ride this out."

The bogus plumber has been reported in Darlington and the Eaglescliffe area.
