Cong tries to play down talk of Rahul's elevation in party.
Replying to a barrage of questions, party spokesperson Renuka Chowdhury on Monday said there is no need for any anxiety on the issue.
To questions about delay in anointing Rahul as number two, Chowdhury said: " I do not think anybody needs to anoint anybody. He is already number two in the party." She also dismissed the contention that Rahul's elevation in the party may raise question mark on the hierarchy of Prime Minister Manmohan Singh within the Congress.
" Can the Prime Minister be number two? He is the Prime Minister. Prime Minister is an independent post. It has nothing to do with number two in the party," she told reporters.
She, though, did not give a direct reply to the question as to when a formal announcement regarding Rahul's new designation may be announced. She said it would happen at an appropriate time.
Chowdhury also defended Rahul's remarks regarding Kargil war at a party rally on Sunday. The Congress general secretary had reminded the BJP that while in opposition his party had supported the ruling NDA on the Kargil issue but with roles reversed, it was not reciprocating on national issues.
