Conexant Introduces VoIP Handset Adaptor Reference Design.
Fall VON 2003
NEWPORT BEACH, Calif.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Sept. 22, 2003
New Design Enables Analog Telephone Connections to VoIP Networks
Conexant Systems, Inc. (Nasdaq:CNXT), a worldwide leader in semiconductor system solutions for digital home information and entertainment networks, today unveiled a session initiation protocol (SIP) voice over Internet protocol (VoIP) reference design for analog and cordless telephone handset adaptors. SIP is an emerging standard for setting up, maintaining and tearing down real-time communications sessions over IP networks. The reference design, which includes Conexant's home network processor, voice coprocessor and voice codec, can be used for residential and commercial applications including connecting analog phones and fax machines to digital VoIP, enterprise or small-office networks. The reference design also includes an interface for Ethernet, ADSL and cable modem connectivity.
"Our new reference design essentially transforms a traditional telephone into an Internet-based device, providing individuals with untethered connectivity to voice over IP networks," said Chee Kwan, vice president of Broadband Access Products for Conexant. "Advances in Internet telephony and the emergence of new VoIP carriers are creating consumer demand for lower-cost Internet-based voice services. Our new platform enables manufacturers to provide consumers with a convenient, easy-to-install Internet telephony option that they can use with their existing telephone handsets."
The reference design includes Conexant's CX82100 home network processor (HNP), CXP9168 voice coprocessor, and CX20437 voice codec. The HNP connects through its host interface bus and provides a platform on which voice control functions and network or communications protocols can be implemented. The voice codec provides digital-to-analog and analog-to-digital conversion. The voice coprocessor compresses and decompresses one channel of packet voice from a telephone line or handset, and interfaces to the host network processor over a parallel interface bus. The adaptor design supports one voice port and one 10/100BaseT Ethernet port.
Conexant's innovative semiconductor system solutions are driving digital home information and entertainment networks worldwide. The company has leveraged its expertise and leadership position in modem technologies to enable more Internet connections than all of its competitors combined, and continues to develop leading integrated silicon solutions for cable, satellite, terrestrial data and digital video networks.
