Condensing heat transfer efficiency.

The proven heat transfer efficiency of Alfa Laval's spiral heat exchangers makes them ideal for use in a variety of processes. Now, the company has introduced the ALSHE Cond, a new price-competitive version designed specifically for use in typical two-phase processes as a condenser, reflux condenser, reboiler, gas cooler and heater.

Unlike the conventional spiral heat exchanger in which the media flow in direct counter-current flow, the ALSE Cond is configured so that one stream is in spiral flow while the other flows across it, in parallel to its axis. The spiral flow channel generally accommodates the cooling medium while the cross flow channel is dedicated to the gas or vapour to be cooled. This imaginative design ensures that the unit can handle high liquid velocities in the closed, spiral channel and large gas or vapour volumes and low pressure drop on the other side.

The liquid velocity generated in the spiral channel serves a dual function:

It increases heat transfer efficiency, and it virtually eliminates fouling since any obstruction, by reducing the cross-section of the channel, serves only to increase turbulence which scrubs the channel wall clean.

On the gas side, minimal vapour pressured drop is readily achieved so high capacity vacuum systems are rendered unnecessary. A large cross-flow area within a relatively short length enables a single exchanger to handle extremely large gas volume flows. Despite this large capacity, the ALSHE Cond is a very compact unit, thanks to the wrapped cylindrical arrangement of its heat transfer surfaces. This ensures not only that capital and installation costs are much lower than for a competitive design such as a shell & tube exchanger but that the space required for space and installation is reduced by as much as 80%.

There are currently four models in the ALSHE Cond range with the ability to handle temperatures up to a maximum of 3000[degrees]C, a minimum of -1000[degrees]C and design pressures of up to 8 barg.
