BEIRUT: Prominent local religious and political figures in the town of Wadi Khaled implored officials Tuesday to ensure the protection of the Lebanese-Syrian border.

A security source told The Daily Star heavy fire was heard in Wadi Khaled Monday night from the Syrian side of the border, and from Syrian military centers, causing major panic among Lebanese residents and Syrian refugees. Prominent figures in Wadi Khaled held a meeting calling on officials to ensure protection of the border, expressing their fear of possible infiltration by a third party and the incitement of civil strife, which they said could lead to a military interference in the area.
