Comtech Telecommunications Corp. Signs $3.5 Million Purchase Agreement with DIRECTV for New DVB-S2 Satcom Equipment.

MELVILLE, N.Y. -- Comtech Telecommunications Corp. (NASDAQ: CMTL) announced today that its Tempe, Arizona-based subsidiary, Comtech EF Data Corp., signed a volume purchase agreement with DIRECTV, Inc. The agreement is for a minimum of $3.5 million over two years and encompasses the purchase of DVB-S2 Broadcast Satellite Modulators and Redundancy Switches.

DIRECTV will deploy the Comtech EF Data DVB-S2 Modulators and 1:1 Redundancy Switches to power its new high-definition television (HDTV) uplink services. The Modulators are based on the emerging satellite transmission standard, DVB-S2. DVB-S2 extends the range of possible applications by combining the functionality of previous standards developed for the direct-to-home and professional environments. The broad range of modulation and coding formats of DVB-S2 enable link performance optimization - delivering on average 30% greater throughput when compared to DVB-S services.

"The bandwidth efficiencies offered by the DVB-S2-based Modulators will enable the cost effective delivery of the most technologically advanced form of digital television, HDTV," said Fred Kornberg, President and Chief Executive Officer of Comtech Telecommunications Corp.
