Compuware Simplifies and Extends Multi-tier Application Development And Deployment Through XML.

UNIFACE Automatically Generates Well-formed XML Data Streams and Valid DTDs

FARMINGTON HILLS, Mich., Sept. 19 /PRNewswire/ --

Compuware Corporation (Nasdaq: CPWR) today announced UNIFACE support for XML, extending development and deployment of multi-tier, e-business applications. UNIFACE allows for easy handling of XML by generating well-formed XML and valid Document Type Definitions (DTDs) on request. As a result no XML skills or DTD knowledge is necessary for e-business application development and organizations benefit from increased developer productivity, ease of maintenance and reduced costs. This is one in a series of initiatives by Compuware to embrace XML, which it will continue to do across its application development lifecycle solutions.

"Compuware UNIFACE support for XML gives organizations the power to deploy multi-tiered, distributed enterprise applications in their infrastructure of choice," says Andy Heydon, Vice President Software Development, Universal Algorithms. "Both UNIFACE and XML are open and independent and are ideally suited to integrate existing technology on a platform, data and application level. This ability to quickly leverage existing IT assets means a solid and risk-free engagement in B2B e-business."

XML is the cornerstone of integration and essential in a B2B world. XML makes it possible to define the content of a component containing data separate to its formatting, making it easy to reuse the content in other applications or in other presentation environments, for example client/server and web. XML offers a process-, platform-, database- and organization- independent syntax for sharing and exchanging data. XML's portable data quality seamlessly complements UNIFACE's portable application components.

"UNIFACE supports component-based enterprise application development including stateless component execution," says Edwin Schumacher, Director Product Management of Compuware UNIFACE products. "By supporting XML for inter-component communication, UNIFACE's distributed application architecture is further enhanced, extending Compuware's multi-tier e-business development and deployment capabilities."

UNIFACE provides easy handling of, and all necessary set-up facilities for XML streams. The structure of XML streams can be created and modified with the fully integrated DTD Editor. The DTD Editor, including a DTD wizard with a graphical interface, allows the specification of the elements used in an XML stream, the multiplicity of each element, the content of each element, the order in which elements can occur and the attributes of each element. Therefore UNIFACE allows for integrated management of XML structures and associated application logic.

In addition to the DTD Editor, UNIFACE provides full mapping facilities, DTD generation from a component's structure and DTD generation from entities. Mapping enables DTD elements to be mapped to UNIFACE application model elements and makes DTDs available to non-UNIFACE components. Consistency of message structures and correct implementation of the data model for the application and/or database system is essential for multi-tier application development and deployment.

UNIFACE is Compuware's development environment for building, renewing and integrating strategic applications. UNIFACE focuses on the critical areas of e-commerce, enterprise application integration and legacy renewal to reduce the cost of ownership of business-critical applications and increase the return on investment of the IT budget.
