Applications of the manipulation of light using diffractive optical elements (DOEs) are found in such areas as telecommunications, electronics, laser technologies, and biomedical engineering. This volume covers both principles and applications and arises from research carried out in the framework of the Russian-American program "Basic Research in Higher Education." It is based on a previous work titled Methods of Computer Optics, published in Russian in 2000 (Fizmatlit, Moscow) and in English in 2002 (John Wiley & Sons); a second edition was published in English in 2003. New research results as well as some revised thinking about the earlier presentations inspired the main authors to prepare this new book. Editor Soifer is affiliated with the Russian Academy of Science's Institute of Image Processing Systems, Samara.
