Composer John Beckwith is the recipient of the 2013 Arts and Letters Club Award.

Composer John Beckwith is the recipient of the 2013 Arts and Letters Club Award, recognizing his more-than-half-century contribution to Canadian music as composer, writer, critic and, especially, music educator. The former Dean of Music at University of Toronto and Founding Director of its Institute for Canadian Music receives a medal, honorarium and membership to Toronto's Arts and Letters Club. Among those slated to perform at an April gala award celebration were Larry Beckwith, Artistic Director of Toronto Masque Theatre, baritone Doug MacNaughton, soprano Monica Whicher and tenor Colin Ainsworth. With writer and broadcaster Rick Phillips as MC, the occasion also marked the premiere of a new Beckwith work for flute and piano. In opera, he is particularly remembered for his collaboration with writer James Reaney, which resulted in a quartet of stage works: Night-blooming Cereus, The Shivaree, Crazy to Kill and Taptoo!
