Company described as great place to work.

Not only is Northern Abcor a stable business, it is also described as "a great place to work."

Upon entering the offices of Northern Abcor, a complete stranger can sense the friendly and relaxed atmosphere that exists.

The company's eight employees regard Northern Abcor's "team environment" as a "close-knit family", headed by a man that respects his staff, not only as employees, but also as individuals.

George Melnychuk says his employees "always have been and will continue to be our single most valuable resource." He says their dedication and loyalty is very much appreciated.

Northern Abcor demonstrates its appreciation for its employees in several ways.

For example, training and career development are company priorities. Melnychuk says he wants his employees to provide the best technical service that is possible. As a result, the company's employees are continually learning and being challenged.

Employees are often sent to Montreal, Toronto or the U.S. to undergo training on specific products or systems. The employee is able to expand his or her knowledge and expertise, and the company benefits by being able to offer the best technical advice to customers about products and materials which, in turn, helps solve the customer's problems.

Entrepreneurship is also encouraged by Melnychuk.

One example of this is the responsibility and autonomy given to Ray Cantin, Northern Abcor's territorial manager in Timmins. Cantin is responsible for the marketing and promotion of products, as well as the development of clients.

This level of responsibility and working autonomy is also enjoyed by Northern Abcor's outside sales representatives.

In addition, Northern Abcor has embarked upon a profit-sharing scheme. All employees are eligible to participate.

The personal circumstances of employees are also taken into consideration.

For example, when company accountant Cathy Larmon became pregnant less than one year after working for Northern Abcor, Melnychuk arranged for her to work fewer hours and to hire someone to fill in when she was away from the office.

In addition, when her child was born, Larmon was allowed to bring the baby to work for several months while she searched for child care. This flexibility and consideration was very much appreciated by Larmon.

Northern Abcor also offers employee incentives.

After 10 years of employment two employees, Astrid Stevens and Cindy McLellan, were given the choice of a cash bonus or a trip to Hawaii. Stevens opted for the trip while McLellan took the money.

As McLellan states, when the company does well the employees also benefit. And when times are tough, the employees also feel some of the bumps.

Melnychuk admits that there have been times when he has called upon his employees to help the company survive a difficult period.

For example, McLellan recalls that during the recession of the early 1980s, rather than laying off employees, Northern Abcor called upon its employees to take a cut in pay. McLellan says the employees agreed. And when the company's fortunes improved, they recouped their pay loss with interest.

While there are few women working in the industrial supply business, Northern Abcor has taken a leading role in this area. Of its employees, four are women, and each of these works directly with clients or suppliers.

The staff of Northern Abcor includes the following people:


Glen Fournier, the newest employee of Northern Abcor, was hired nine months ago. He is an inside sales representative who provides customers with product information and pricing.

Fournier believes Northern Abcor is a great training ground, because he is constantly learning and being challenged.

He says he enjoys the team environment at Northern Abcor and looks forward to progressing in his career while with the company.


Dave Pattui was hired in 1989 and is employed as an outside technical sales representative. He is responsible for a specific territory and works primarily with Northern Abcor's customers.

Pattui says he enjoys working at Northern Abcor because it is a fair and close-knit company where everyone looks out for one another. He continues to find his job rewarding and very challenging.


John Lekun was hired in 1987 and also holds the position of outside technical sales representative.

Lekun too has a specific territory to cover and works primarily with clients such as purchasing agents, engineers and maintenance personnel.

He describes Northern Abcor as an "excellent company to work for." He enjoys the autonomy and responsibility of his position and views Northern Abcor as a team providing a necessary service to Northern Ontario industries.


Ray Cantin came on board with Northern Abcor in 1987. He is the territorial manager in Timmins.

Cantin has the most practical experience, having worked for Kidd Creek Mines for 14 years. He says he decided to leave Kidd Creek because Northern Abcor was offering an opportunity for him to expand his knowledge and, at the same time, to "strut" his knowledge and experiences.

Cantin enjoys the freedom and independence of being in charge of his own territory. He decides how to promote, when to market, what is promoted and who to call upon. Although he is located in Timmins, Cantin says he has always felt like he is part of the team.


Rick Hemingway has been with Northern Abcor since 1987. He is currently employed as sales manager.

Hemingway was persuaded by George Melnychuk to leave Toronto and move to Sudbury. Prior to working for Northern Abcor Hemingway was a supplier to the company.

Hemingway says he has not regretted the move because he has learned a lot from George and finds his job very rewarding and challenging.

He says that he enjoys the friendly work environment, where everyone is well-trained and staff can draw from one another's experiences.


Cindy McLellan was hired in 1979 and works in sales processing. She works primarily with suppliers and is responsible for inventory control and expediting.

McLellan enjoys the comfortable work environment at Northern Abcor and the challenge of her position.


Cathy Larmon came on board in June 1985. She is employed as an accountant/controller.

Prior to working for Northern Abcor, Larmon worked in accounting for 12 years. Her first task was to computerize the office.


Astrid Stevens was Northern Abcor's first employee, hired in 1977. She currently holds the position of inside sales representative.

As Stevens' background was in education, she says she has learned everything about the business from scratch. She enjoys working with the customers and notes that her job is still challenging and satisfying.
