TripAdvisor reports drop in Gulf region travel searches. An analysis of search data on the TripAdvisor website shows a significant drop-off in searches for hotels, restaurants and activities at popular Gulf of Mexico destinations since the oil spill threatened beaches in the region. Searches involving Pensacola, Fla., for instance, were down 40% compared with the same period last year, and searches for Fort Walton Beach, Fla., were down 33%. But the larger cities of New Orleans and Gulfport, Miss., showed year-over-year increases of 12% and 10%. May 27, 2010

Tokyo became the number one Asian destination in TripAdvisor, the consumer-based travel guide website. Their latest Travelers Choice 2010 chose Tokyo for the No. 1 destination in its Top 25 Destinations in Asia for the energetic urban culture, art and design, high-level culinary experience and the exceptional public safety. This is the second major title for Japan in TripAdvisorOs annual ranking, following Kyoto, which was chosen as the No. 1 destination in Asia in the same category in 2008. This yearOs list also chose Kyoto for the fourth-best Asian destination, with the fifth position taken by Nara, the city that celebrates the historic 1,300th anniversary of the foundation of JapanOs first capital this year. The historic Sumida-ward of Tokyo is reaching up to the sky with the Tokyo Sky Tree, the cityOs new digital broadcast antenna tower, and is scheduled to be completed in 2012. The tower will be the worldOs tallest free-standing tower once it is completed at 2,080 feet high, and the top observation deck at 1,476 feet high will look down over all of Tokyo. TripAdvisor has launched its TripAdvisor iPhone application, available on Apple's App Store. The free application allows travelers to search for popular hotels, restaurants and attractions, as well as find the cheapest airfares available. The application is available in 13 different languages, giving travelers around the globe a localized TripAdvisor experience. The new TripAdvisor iPhone application, which replaces Local Picks in the App Store, uses the iPhone's GPS capabilities to allow travelers to search for nearby hotels, restaurants and attractions. With the tap of a finger, users may sort by rating, distance and price. Travelers can also send in reviews while they're on the road and their experiences are still fresh. Additionally, travelers can use TripAdvisor Flights, the site's flight search engine, to find the cheapest airfares using their iPhone. TripAdvisor has announced the results of its annual European travel survey of more than 1,200 U.S. respondents. Trans-Atlantic trips look to be more popular in 2010, with 60 percent planning to visit Europe in the coming 12 months, up from 50 percent who did so last year. The majority of travelers appear undeterred by the recent volcanic ash cloud, with just 6 percent reconsidering their European trips as a result. Thirty-three percent say more favorable exchange rates have increased their interest in traveling to Europe this year. Fall is the peak season for European travel, with 54 percent planning a leisure trip in September or October. Thirty-eight percent of those planning trips to Europe will travel in May or June. TripAdvisor Flights data shows that the most searched for destinations in Europe are London, Paris, Rome, Barcelona and Madrid. The most up-and-coming travel destinations in Europe are Istanbul, Zurich, Seville, Athens and Copenhagen, based on increases in search activity on TripAdvisor. Travelers embrace the sights and sounds of Europe with open arms, according to the survey. Fifty-nine percent are more adventurous than they would be at home, 91 percent are experimental in their choices of local cuisine, 76 percent make an effort to speak the local language, and 58 percent alter their dress to appear less American. The survey also reveals travelers' perceptions of amenities and services in Europe, compared to the U.S. Fifty-eight percent believe the food is better in Europe, while 35 percent consider it to be equally good. Ninety percent maintain that Europe boasts superior public transportation. While 30 percent believe service is worse in Europe, 51 percent say it's the same. Fifty-seven percent think the sites are better in Europe, while 41 percent consider them equal. Thirty-six percent consider accommodations to be of a lower standard in Europe, while 50 percent believe it's a draw.
