Lufthansa Technik is investing up to $500 million in preparing for the A380, Chairman August Hennigsen during last week's proving flight from Frankfurt to New York JFK. "We intend to offer complete MRO support for the aircraft," he said, noting that LHT acquired expertise as its engineers were involved in the A380 specification. Lufthansa Technik investment will cover LH's A380 MRO needs, Henningsen said, but LHT hopes to add third-party customers. It expects the first LH A380 heavy check at the end of 2010. Its A380 capability includes construction of a new hangar in Frankfurt capable of housing four A380s and a hangar in partnership with Ameco Beijing in the Chinese capital, creation of the N3 Trent engine overhaul JV with Rolls-Royce and the Spairliners JV with Air France Industries.
