The U.S. Department of Transportation (DoT) has assessed a civil penalty against Delta Air Lines for violating federal rules regarding passengers denied boarding (ObumpedO) on oversold flights. OAirlines often oversell flights in order to ensure that they fill all their seats, and the bumping rules are designed to protect consumers when this happens,O said U.S. Transportation Secretary Ray LaHood. OWe take these rules seriously and will take enforcement action when necessary.O Delta was ordered to cease and desist from further violations and assessed a civil penalty of USD 375,000. Up to USD 200,000 of the penalty may be used by the carrier to implement systems not required by the rules that will benefit consumers. Jul 7, 2009

Comair says it expects to furlough up to 100 additional pilots between September and the end of the year in the wake of parent company Delta Air Lines's decision to make service cuts. The airline placed 295 pilots on furlough in October. Comair President John Bendoraitis informed employees this week that "additional furloughs among our crews will be unavoidable" and that the Delta Air Lines subsidiary will "continue to assess administrative staffing levels to ensure they remain appropriate with what is needed to support the operations," according to The Cincinnati Enquirer. Comair employs approximately 5,600. Last month Delta announced a 10 percent capacity cut and accompanying job reductions effective this fall, and the Enquirer said Comair will cut 20 percent of its total flying. Jul 9, 2009

Delta Air Lines and the Australian Virgin Blue Airlines Group have today announced plans to seek approval for a joint venture. The tie-up would allow Delta and the Virgin Blue Group to collaborate on routes between the US and the South Pacific. "For Delta, this agreement is a significant milestone in the expansion of our global network in the Australia and South Pacific region," said Glen Hauenstein, Delta's executive vp for network and revenue management. Both airlines have said they will begin to code share ahead of their application for anti-trust immunity (ATI) with the US Department of Transportation (DoT) and the Australian Competition and Consumer Commission. Delta and Virgin Blue will also begin to co-operate on their frequent flyer and lounge access programmes in preparation for the joint venture. Jul 9, 2009

Virgin Blue group and Delta Air Lines will seek regulatory approval to form a comprehensive joint venture. In a joint statement the Australian and US carriers say the deal will expand their reach "between the USA and Australia and the South Pacific." The deal includes collaboration on routes and product planning and the carriers will place their codes on each other's flights, it says. Each carrier will extend frequent flyer programme benefits and lounge access to the other's customers, it adds. Jul 9, 2009

Mesa Air Group announced that the US Court of Appeals upheld an injunction against Delta Air Lines preventing it from canceling Mesa subsidiary Freedom Airlines' contract to fly 22 ERJ-145s for Delta Connection. Delta cited operational problems, but the court ruled, "The evidence showed that Delta induced Mesa to agree to Delta's coordinated cancellations by promising not to count such cancellations against it," Reuters reported.
