CompUSA INC. AGREES TO RETAIL FULL COMPAQ COMPUTER LINE
DALLAS, Sept. 8 /PRNewswire/ -- CompUSA Inc. (NASDAQ: CUSA), America's largest computer superstore retailer, announced today that it will carry the full line of products from Compaq Computer Corp. (NYSE: CPQ)
An agreement executed between the two companies provides for Compaq's entire line of computer products and peripherals, including Compaq's new and much heralded "Prolinea" line, to be available to CompUSA's customers nationwide. CompUSA is authorized to market COMPAQ products through all of its retail locations, as well as its corporate and government sales divisions, beginning Sept. 8, and expects to have the stores fully stocked in October.
"We are very pleased to add Compaq to our product assortment of high-value personal computers," said Nathan Morton, president and chief executive officer of CompUSA. "Compaq's new products and pricing make their line extremely competitive in the marketplace, and we view their partnership as another step in broadening the market for personal computers. As the market leader, CompUSA is capable of significantly expanding the distribution of COMPAQ products into the retail marketplace in a very short time.
"Because personal computer prices have continued to decline, there is a wonderful opportunity for CompUSA to generate significant incremental sales at a higher average ticket as customers upgrade to more powerful units," Morton said. "The actions being taken by Compaq and other manufacturers as they seek to maintain or gain market share in this highly competitive environment should expand our customer base significantly. More and more individuals are deciding that computers have finally reached an affordable level, especially for home use, where there is substantial room for further growth."
CompUSA Inc. operates 30 high-volume computer superstores in 21 major metropolitan markets from coast to coast. The stores offer over 5,000 personal computer, software and related products at deep-discount prices to retail, business and government customers. Each store also includes a full-service computer maintenance operation and classroom training facilities.
