Community initiative making major impact.

BUSINESS in the Community Wales says its work with more than 300 businesses is making a significant impact.

It said that many of these businesses give much needed support to the communities in which they operate and are also seeing the benefits their contribution makes in building their own business profile and in the personal development of their staff.

BICW director Peter Williams said: "Our aim is to address key social issues in the most deprived rural and urban areas of Wales. We have worked in partnership with private, public and voluntary organisations to ensure we meet the needs of the communities we serve and have achieved significant success in expanding our activities within these areas.'' Key achievements during 2001 had included:

levering in more than pounds 206,500 of inkind support;

providing educational support to over 70 schools by 52 firms across Wales;

giving support worth pounds 83,000 to community projects as a result of team challenges and employee volunteering.

Firms which support BICW include BHP Billiton, First Hydro, Kronospan and Warwick International.
