Commemoration held for 263 miners who died during mine explosion in 1992.

ZONGULDAK (CyHAN)- A commemoration ceremony was held for 263 mine workers who were killed during a mine explosion on March 3, 1992 in the northern province of Zonguldak.

Large numbers of miners attended at the ceremony which started with a Quran recitation. Deputy head of the Turkish Hard Coal Enterprises (TTK) Ercan GebeE-, Kozlu district governor Ahmet Karakaya General Mine Workers' Union (GMyS) President EyE-p AlabaE- and Zonguldak Mayor Muharrem Akdemir also attended at the ceremony. Speaking during the commemoration, AlabaE- said that tragedy is the biggest work-related incident in mining sector. AlabaE- also said the number of the workers who killed while working in mines is higher than the people who died during the Turkish War of Independence in Zonguldak.

Turkey is ranked third in Europe in terms of mining deaths and that 647 miners have died in the last 30 years in Turkey.
