Comic Relief the big winner as parties grab new domain names.

PLAID CYMRU has agreed to pay a donation to charity after a mischievous former Labour special adviser bought the web domain name

David Taylor, who used to work for former Welsh Secretary Peter Hain but has since left politics for a career in business, said: "They had plenty of opportunity to try to acquire it during the landrush and priority phases and I'm somewhat surprised they didn't do so. Perhaps they don't think .wales is important and would prefer a .uk domain name. Who knows? "I had planned to use it for a future commercial project but if Plaid Cymru have now decided they want it I will gladly hand it over to them in return for a suitable donation to Comic Relief."

Helen Bradley, Plaid Cymru's head of news said: "Plaid Cymru - the Party of Wales is proud to be one of the first organisations to use the .cymru and .wales domains and we encourage other organisations to follow our example. As a party we campaigned hard to ensure that these domains were established, with Plaid Cymru's Ieuan Wyn Jones' work as Economic Development Minister at the time essential in seeing this come to pass. These new domains will mean that Wales will have a real presence on the internet, and the economic impact of that is hugely exciting. We would encourage other companies from Wales to take advantage of this opportunity to promote their businesses online by emphasising their Welsh identity.

"I would be pleased to take Mr Taylor up on his offer and we're more than ready to make a donation to such a worthy cause as Comic Relief.

"I would also like to take this opportunity to extend a similar opportunity to the Labour Party in Wales. As the owner of the domain I would be more than happy to hand that over to them should they also be willing to make a donation to Comic Relief.

"It is good that even in the heat of an election time political parties can create an opportunity to raise money for important charities."

It is understood that Welsh Labour will make a reciprocal donation to gain ownership of the domain.
