Comic Ben: Maggie was not a witch.

Byline: AARON TINNEY

BEN Elton says Margaret Thatcher wasn't wicked - despite making his name slagging off the Iron Lady.

The veteran stand-up, 62, now on a comeback tour, said she had "genuine principle" - even though the Tory battleaxe was branded a "witch" after she privatised services.

He said: "I recognised she was a person of genuine principle. I always believed she was doing what she did because she believed it from the bottom of her heart.

"I hate what she did but I didn't see her as personally reprehensible."

The former prime minister died of a stroke in 2013 aged 87.

Her death led to the song Ding Dong! The Witch Is Dead becoming a Top 10 chart hit.

But Blackadder writer Ben insisted that - compared to Thatcher - today's leaders are morons.

He said: "To say Boris Johnson lacks a moral compass is like saying the Flat Earth Society lacks an actual compass.

"He's not governed by any form of morality, just venal self-interest, and it's a very sad time. We have front page headlines speculating whether the Prime Minister will obey the law."
