Com21 and Fujikura Win Cable Modem Order in Japan; Hekkai KATCH Network, Inc. to Use COM21's ComUNITY Access System for Data Over Cable Service.

MILPITAS, Calif.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--April 3, 1998--Com21, Inc. announced today that Fujikura Ltd., a Com21 systems integrator in Japan, has received initial orders from Hekkai KATCH Network, Inc. for Com21's ComUNITY Access System to be commercially deployed in its data-over-cable service.

The Hekkai KATCH Network covers the five cities of Kariya, Anjo, Takahama, Chiryu and Hekinan and currently has 58,753 subscribers.

The Hekkai KATCH Network plans to start large-scale field testing in May, 1998 and to begin commercial service in December. Com21 will supply the cable modem system, and Fujikura will support the installation and introduction of the service.

Fujikura is an authorized systems integrator for Com21 products in the Japanese domestic market and has already installed Com21 systems for KOTO CABLE TELEVISION Co., Ltd., Suzuka Cable Co., Ltd. and other Japanese companies preparing for commercial services.
