Colorful cultural activities mark Int'l Women Day at Lok Virsa.

ISLAMABAD: Potohar Organization for Development Advocacy (PODA) on occasion of International Women's Day, organized a range of cultural activities at Lok Virsa in a colorful event on Friday.

Member National Assembly Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf Fozia Behram was the chief guest on the occasion.

In her remarks, she highlighted the efforts of the incumbent government for the uplift and progress of women in the country. She also appreciated PODA work for betterment of rural communities.

Deputy Representative of the European Union Mission in Pakistan, Ms. Anne Marchel, speaking on the event underlined the importance of the women's day. She stressed that the movement for a fair and free of discrimination society should be our goal.

The Women's day event included a theatre play by PODA's community theater group named `Jugni Theater Group' on the theme of women empowerment. A dialogue session was also held on health and nutrition of rural women and children.

International Women's day is observed all over the world on March 8 every year. Women rights organization particularly celebrates this day to highlight the important role of women and their immense contribution to the society.

Every year a theme is selected for women's day. The theme for this year is "Balance for better" to motivate people to build a gender-balanced world.

PODA Regional Program Manager, Ms. Naheeda Abbasi, elaborated on the theme of international women's day and spoke of the challenges faced by rural women of Pakistan.

Chairperson PODA Board Dr. Zarina Salamat, addressing the women activists, said; "on this day we celebrate the social, economic cultural and political achievements of women", she said adding, "the day also reminds us of the commitment to take action for accelerating gender parity".

Executive Director PODA Ms. Kaukab Jehan said the history of international women's day tells us that women activists used this day to raise voice for peace during the World wars. She said Pakistani women are celebrating this women's day at a time of tensions at the borders and fear of war.

So, she stated, the women of Pakistan would take this opportunity to not only celebrate achievements of women but also to give a call for peace in the region and around the globe. She said the movement for the rights of women continues all over the world.

PODA's event included launching ceremony of a collection of selected poems by Pakistan feminist poets. The book titled "Mein Adam-e-Nau ki Hamsafar Hoon" famous feminist poet and a champion of women's rights movement Ms. Kishwar Naheed recited her poem written for women's day.

The event concluded on a music gala. Singers and musicians of Lajpal Group entertained the audience with a mesmerizing performance singing celebratory songs acknowledging the role of women.
