Hunt, a retired software engineer who has written other books on Union colonels from various states, presents a biographical dictionary of Union army colonels who commanded regiments in Indiana, Kentucky, and Tennessee, and failed to be promoted to brigadier general or brevet brigadier general. Organized by state and regiment, the entries consist of biographical sketches of colonels and their Civil War service that include information on their birth and death dates, education, participation in other wars, occupation, burial place, ranks in the army, battle honors, and other details, as well as black and white photos. Preceding the entries is a breakdown by regiment of all the colonels who commanded regiments in each state, with their name and dates of service, including colonels promoted beyond that rank.
