College makes strong start to season.

MIDDLESBROUGH College started their AOC basketball season with a 65-35 victory over Gateshead College.

New Scholarship Player Jake Butler showed why he has earned the honour with a dominant 34 points, nine rebounds and four steals performance in the first victory.

The game started slowly for both side as the colleges traded baskets but a strong second quarter from Middlesbrough college had the lead 30-22 at half time.

The third quarter was Middlesbrough's best as Jake scored freely with Lewis Haley dominating the boards with the college working well as a team and everyone contributing to a great third quarter.

In the fourth quarter Middlesbrough were able to use more new players giving them valuable experience for the season.

Coach Steve Butler said: "It's great to get off to a win, We are a new team with only two players returning from last season but we played well and led from start to finish.

"We've got a lot of work to do but these lads are committed in training and have shown a great attitude to learning."

Middlesbrough College offers sport scholarships and Jake Butler has been awarded a basketball.

The package means he receives a training kit, a hoody, iPad, free physio and free travel to and from college.

Jake said: "I'm really grateful to Middlesbrough College for allowing me the scholarship. My new team mates are great and we've put in some hard work already and it was great to get our first win of the season.

"We know it's going to be a tough season ahead of us but we will train hard every day and try to improve throughout the season."
