College makes big connection; * TEXT BOOKED: Jason Taylor (left), team leader for Kirklees College Employer Gateway, Andy Earnshaw, of SMileS.

KIRKLEES College has teamed up with a text messaging specialist to get the word out to companies and would-be students about its apprenticeship courses.

Golcar-based SMileS has set up a service for the college so that anyone interested in its courses can get in touch by texting KC to 67777.

The college, which runs apprenticeships in 17 different areas of work, has already trialled the system and it is now being rolled out to cover thousands of companies across Kirklees.

Jason Taylor, team leader for the college's Employer Gateway based at Batley, said: "Providing a text service is something we need to do - and it is very cost-effective. Text is what people use, especially young people.

"We are also trying to respond to employers and make the college more commercially aware."

As building work on the new college campus at Chapel Hill continues, Mr Taylor said college business support officers Steve March and Helen Mahoney were also promoting the facilities available at the Batley centre.

"We have IT and conference facilities which we can offer to businesses," he said.

"And when it comes to apprentices, we can visit company premises to discuss their training needs."
