Collectors Universe Acquires Odyssey Publications Inc.; Second Major Autograph Company Acquired This Year.

Business Editors

NEWPORT BEACH, Calif.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--July 18, 2000

Collectors Universe Inc. (Nasdaq:CLCT) (www.collectors.com) Tuesday announced that it has acquired privately held Odyssey Publications Inc. in an all cash transaction.

Odyssey publishes Autograph Collector, the most widely read autograph magazine in this country, as well as other periodicals and price guides for the celebrity autograph market. The principals of Odyssey, Bill Miller and Darrell Talbert, are recognized authorities in the autograph authentication market and have signed multi-year employment agreements with the company.

Collectors Universe CEO, David Hall, commented, "The Odyssey acquisition concludes our strategy of consolidating the fragmented $200 million sports and celebrity autograph market. Earlier this year, we acquired Jimmy Spence's sports autograph authentication company.

"Mr. Spence is one of the most respected sports autograph experts in this country as Bill Miller and Darrell Talbert are for celebrity autographs. We intend to leverage our acquisition of these two companies to become the dominant player in the autograph market for both authentication and sales.

"In addition, we intend to take our Sportscard Market Report (SMR) magazine, with monthly distribution of over 14,000 copies, to national newsstand distribution through the expertise Odyssey brings to the company. Adding autographs to our other major positions in sportscards, rare coins, U.S. currency and vintage records further expands our total market for collectibles", concluded Hall.
