Collection of Electricity Duty by PEPCO termed violation.

PESHAWAR, May 10, 2010 (Balochistan Times): The Public Accounts Committee (PAC) of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa Assembly, while declaring as illegal deduction of Electricity Duty by PEPCO, has directed Provincial Finance Department to chalk out comprehensive strategy for collection of duty. The directives were issued during a meeting of PAC held here at Assembly Secretariat with Deputy Speaker, Khushdil Khan Advocate in the chair. The meeting held detailed review of accounts of Finance department for the fiscal year 2004-05. During the meeting, it was observed that PEPCO is collecting Electricity duty which is clear violation of Finance Act 1964. The participants of the meeting observed that collection of Electricity Duty is the responsibility of Finance department but no proper policy was adopted in this regard. The meeting was told by officials of Finance department that steps were taken for collection of duty, but no proper heed was given by competent authority to the plea of Finance department. A petition has also been filed in the court and verdict is awaited by the department concerned. However, the meeting attendants observed that collection of Electricity duty by PEPCO is violation of Finance Act and directed the Finance department to prepare policy for collection of same duty.
