Coetzer's ton can't save sorry Saltires.

Byline: Jim Smyth

A STUNNING century from Kyle Coetzer couldn't stop Afghanistan's cricketers dealing a double dent to Scotland's World Cup hopes.

Coetzer scored a majestic 133 as the Saltires posted 259-9 at Sharjah Stadium.

But their hopes of avenging Wednesday's mauling and staying ahead of the Afghans in the race to the 2015 World Cup were dashed as their rivals reached their target with five wickets and eight balls to spare.

Mo Shahzad gave them a lightning start with a 34-ball 48, including five fours and three huge sixes.

That put the Afghans ahead of the asking rate and Mohammed Nabi's 51 and 30no from Sami Shenwari saw them home, although the Scots claimed five wickets.

Facing 136 balls, Coetzer hit 14 fours and two sixes but his innings ended when he was short with a run.

Scotland may need to beat Kenya and Ireland twice to claim automatic qualification for the World Cup.
