Coconut-chocolate bars.

Tuck these cookies into lunch boxes, offer them for desert, or give as gifts. 1/2 cup (1/4 lb.) butter or magazine 1/3 cup each granulated sugar and firmly packed brown sugar 2 tablespoons water 1 large egg 1 teaspoon vanilla 1-1/4 teaspoons baking powder 1 cup all-purpose flour 1/2 cup chopped nuts 1 cup sweetened shredded coconut 1 package (6 oz.) semisweet chocolate baking chips

In a 3- to 4-quart pan, melt butter over medium heat. Remove from heat and let cool until lukewarm. Stir in granulated and brown sugars and water until blended, then beat in egg and vanilla. Stir in baking powder and flour until smooth; mix in nuts, 1/2 cup of the coconut, and chocolate chips.

Spread butter in a buttered 9-inch square pan. Sprinkle evenly with remaining 1/2 cup coconut. Bake in a 350 [deg.] oven until batter just begins to pull away from sides of pan, about 25 minutes.

Place pan on a rack to cool completely before cutting into bars about 1-1/2 by 2-1/4 inches. Makes 24 cookies.
