Coalite brand is saved.

A household name in domestic fuel has been saved from extinction by its Welsh competitor. The South Wales-based smokeless fuel manufacturer Maxibrite has acquired the renowned Coalite brand following the closure of the Bolsover firm. The leading independent solid fuel manufacturer in the UK, Maxibrite produces quality anthracite briquettes. The company, based at Llantrisant, will now add the Coalite brand to its own range of products sold through wholesalers, coal merchants and retail outlets across the UK and overseas.

'I was saddened by the demise of Coalite and thought it would be a huge loss to the trade if this household name slipped into the mists of time,' said Maxibrite chairman Albert Yemm. 'Coalite was undoubtedly the brand leader and by far the best open fire fuel available.

'We saw an exciting opportunity and I am very pleased Maxibrite has purchased the brand name and all associated trademarks of Coalite.'

Maxibrite, founded by Mr Yemm's late brother Glyn in 1962, remains a family-run business, producing 48,000 tons of Welsh anthracite based products each year.
