Coach accused of assault.

Byline: The Register-Guard

COTTAGE GROVE - Police cited a South Medford High School coach on an assault charge Tuesday over an October altercation with a North Eugene High School student at a water polo match.

The incident occurred Oct. 12 at a high school tournament at the Daugherty Aquatic Center in Cottage Grove.

Witnesses characterized a match between the two schools as "quite physical" and noted that a North Eugene player called a South Medford player an obscene name, police said.

Witnesses told police that as the Medford and Eugene players shook hands at the conclusion of a match, the coach grabbed the female student from Eugene, jerked her toward him and threatened to ensure she would never play the sport again if she used profanities toward his team, police said.

Joel Christopher Jones, 46, was charged with fourth-degree assault. He was released and is scheduled to appear Feb. 7 in Cottage Grove Municipal Court, police said.
