Club's Fab Four strike Lyon gold; Mayor leads medal charge at meet.

CITY of Newcastle swimmers took four gold medals at the 13th International Swimming Meet in Lyon, France.

Andrew Mayor continued his run of success in butterfly events, winning the 200m race when leading from the front.

He was well ahead of the field to push out the favourite Joseph Natullo of Italy to win in 2-01.33.

Mayor now heads for the British Trials undefeated in this event this season.

Mayor won medals of all colours in the butterfly events.

He was tested with strong competition and put up a big fight in the 100m race before taking the silver medal in 54.31 behind Netherlands swimmer Joeri Berlinden, who triumphed in 53.94 Mayor also struck bronze in the 50m butterfly with 25.01.

Kayleigh Dawson continued her consistent run in the 800m freestyle of being below the nine-minute mark with victory in 8-55.03. Also in the distance events, Elizabeth Hierons stepped up the mark in the 1500m freestyle to take gold in 17-47.47.

Along the way she also posted personal best times for the 400m freestyle with 4-34.39 and the 800m freestyle with 9-22.27.

Lucy Gordon is making her presence felt in the individual medley event.

She is also catching the eye of the Scottish selectors and would have improved her selection chances over this weekend.

Swimming against a strong Italian opposition, Gordon dug in to pass Francessca Aceto in the final 25m to take the 200m individual medley in 2-19.80.

In the 400m race, Aceto just had the edge in the breaststroke leg - but Gordon was still closing it down in the freestyle where she had to settle for silver in a personal best 4-57.87. Gordon rounded the week off with silver in the 200m butterfly in a new best time of 2-20.51, with club mate Phoebe Lenderyou taking the bronze in 2-22.06.

Jessica Thielmann eased to a silver medal in the 400m freestyle with 4-20.93.

She changed her programme to ensure her shoulder continued to recover from some soreness and swam the breaststroke races.

Her competitive instinct still shone through, however, as she claimed the bronze in the 200m event with 2-44.46.

Lenderyou went on to take another bronze medal.

The 14-year-old, in the final of the 200m backstroke, swam a bold race for a bronze medal in 2-17.74.

Lewis Wiseman-Ord was also among the medals.

He took a bronze in the 400m individual medley with 4-41.42.

All 16 swimmers from Newcastle made finals in a meet attracting swimmers from 14 nations.
