Clouds over St Swithin.

IT RAINED across the country yesterday - St Swithin's Day - and according to folklore, that means it will be wet for the next 40 days.

But weather forecasters have dismissed the old saying as "rubbish".

Neil Talboys said: "It will rain on St Swithin's Day somewhere, but that doesn't meat it will rain for the next 40 days. It never has as far as I know.

"If all goes according to plan there's plenty of fine dry weather on the cards for most of the country.

"Temperatures will be picking up to what we expect for this time of the year - about 21c (70f).
