Clottey joins Alves on Wasl radar.

Dubai: AS Roma target Emmanuel Atukwei Clottey is one of two striker options being considered by Bruno Metsu at Al Wasl as he rebuilds his forward line for next season, according to a source at the club.

Gulf News reported on Wednesday that Brazilian striker Afonso Alves Martins Junior, 31, formerly of Heerenveen and Middlesbrough, was in negotiations with Al Wasl having been released by Qatar's Al Rayyan.

It has now emerged that 24-year-old Ghanaian striker Clottey, of Berekum Chelsea, is the other player on Metsu's radar.

The current top-scorer in the ongoing CAF Champions League with 12 goals in 10 games, Clottey is a reported target for Serie A's AS Roma, who have apparently offered EeAu3 million (Dh17,4 million) for the player. Serious interest has also come from Tunisia's Club Africain Tunis; Congo's TP Mazembe; Egypt's Zamalek; Al Ahly; and Saudi Arabia's Al Ettihad.

Formerly of Ghanaian clubs Great Olympics, Sekondi Wise Fighters and Tema Youth, Clottey has also enjoyed brief loan spells with Austria's Wacker Innsbruck and Denmark's Odense Boldklub. He was also the Ghanaian league top-scorer in 2007 with 14 goals but has made only four appearances for his country since 2008. His last outing was a recall to the side in place of Al Ain's Asamoah Gyan in last Wednesday's 1-1 draw with China in Xi'an.

A source at Al Wasl told Gulf News: "Al Wasl are in negotiations with Brazilian and Ghanaian strikers Afonso Alves and Emmanuel Clottey. A decision will be taken between these two players. However, it must be stressed there is no confirmation on either player as yet."

Berekum Chelsea coach Hans Van Der Pluijm had recently said Clottey wasn't for sale. "I don't think the club's director Emmanuel Kyeremeh will allow Clottey to leave when we are to play in the Champions League with other teams," Pluijm told Ghanaian media.

"He is a prolific striker. You can see the goals he scores. Sometimes you think he is out of the game but he does the most important thing," added Pluijm.

Having already signed Egyptian midfielder Mahmoud Shikabala from Zamalek to support the retained Argentine playmaker Mariano Donda, Metsu is also said to be chasing Australian defender Lucas Neill in place of Omani centre-back Mohammad Shaiba. The attacking void to be filled by either Clottey or Alves was left by outgoing Uruguayan Juan Manuel Olivera and Mohammad Khalatbari from Iran, while Shikabala has taken over Argentine midfielder Juan Mercier's slot.

Elsewhere, unverified reports from South Korea on Wednesday said that Arsenal striker Park Chu-young had rejected a much speculated move to Al Ain. He has opted instead for a transfer to Spain, claim the reports, where Celta Vigo have apparently shown interest.
