Closure of county school set to be finalised.

THE death knell is set to be sounded for a Northumberland middle school.

Northumberland County Council is today being recommended to nally agree the closure of Guide Post Middle School.

Guide Post was earmarked for closure after being one of 17 visited by Ofsted last October following concerns over the standard of education in the county. Inspectors found it to be inadequate and placed it in special measures.

e county then began consultation on its closure, with Stakeford, Ringway and Mowbray rst schools to retain children until the age of 11 instead of nine as they do currently. Bedlington High would then take them at the age of 11.

e Save Guide Post Middle School From Closure action group was formed and mounted petitions which hundreds of people signed, while Wansbeck MP Ian Lavery spoke against the plans.

e council published a statutory notice of closure, triggering four weeks of consultation. A report to the policy board's meeting tells how only 22 responses were received.

It recommends the original proposals be agreed, with the changes to be implemented this summer.
