Clinton calls Karzai after the death of his brother.

WASHINGTON, DC (PAN): US Secretary of State Hillary Clinton on Tuesday called President Hamid Karzai to express her deepest condolences to him and his family on the assassination of his younger brother Ahmad Wali Karzai.

"The United States condemns this murder in the strongest terms. For too long, the people of Afghanistan have suffered under the threat of violence, intolerance, and extremism," Clinton said in a statement after speaking to Karzai over phone.

"We join President Karzai in his prayer for peace and stability in Afghanistan and remain committed to supporting the government and people of Afghanistan in their struggle for peace," she said.

White House Press Secretary Jay Carney said: "At a personal level our prayers and sympathies are with the Karzai family during this difficult time." He, too, condemned the murder on behalf of the United States.

"We don't know who is responsible. There have been some claims and we will certainly work with the Afghan authorities on that, but right now I think the moment here is a personal one, and we express our condolences and condemn the murder," Carney said in response to a question at his daily news conference.

State Department spokeswoman Victoria Nuland said: "As you probably know, the US had worked with Governor Karzai as we work with governors around the country to try to make common cause, to end corruption, to eradicate the drug trade, et cetera."
