Clinton's healthcare reform plan may be delayed.

In an article in the June 3, 1993 edition of the New York Times, it was reported that President Clinton has effectively postponed his effort to reform the national medical system.

Analysts said that Congress is unlikely to pass comprehensive health care legislation (with any attendant sin taxes) this year.

Hillary Clinton's health care task force went out of existence at the end of May, without having prepared health care legislation for submission to Congress.

The charter for the task force said it "would terminate on May 30" unless the President renewed its charter, and Clinton made no move to do so.

White House officials were quoted as saying that Clinton would not unveil his health care proposal until late summer or early fall.

Analysts said that Clinton has recognized the difficulty of introducing health care reform legislation concurrent with his budgetary package.

Staff changes are also said to have contributed to the delay.

The recent appointment of David Gergen as presidential counselor may clinch the postponement.

In an article written for U.S. News & World Report prior to his appointment, Gergen wrote, "Clinton needs to refocus attention on his economic plan, especially on the creation of jobs, and postpone his health care proposals until fall. Otherwise, he risks the loss of both."

In explaining the latest delays, Clinton was quoted as saying, "We're trying to, first of all, get as many of the kinks worked out as we can before we go forward. It's an enormously complicated issue. And then we want to make sure that we have, you know, discussed it with as many people as possible, as many groups and everything, after we've reached some final conclusions, and that when we present it to the Congress, it's presented at a time, and in a way that both Congress and the American people can focus on it."
