Hay & Kilner has an established reputation for handling complex and substantial cases, led by the experienced David Bradshaw, who is a member of the Law Society's Clinical Negligence Panel and also an assessor for the panel. Birth trauma cases account for a significant part of the team's practice and the firm is also active on cerebral palsy cases. The team also has the capability to handle high-value, complex spinal injury claims.

Irwin Mitchell has a strong track record on high-value, complex cases. Angela Curran is an experienced mediator and has a formidable reputation in the region for her expertise in birth trauma, in 2005 settling three major brain injury cases. The team consists of four dedicated fee-earners and two nurses.

Alison Ainsley heads the clinical negligence and personal injury department at Mincoffs Solicitors LLP. Recent highlights include successfully acting for a bereaved family in a clinical negligence claim against a local NHS trust, winning substantial damages. Gillian Muir and the respected and well-known Barry Speker, who is a member of the Law Society's Clinical Negligence Panel, head the clinical negligence team at Samuel Phillips Law Firm. The firm has secured substantial damages awards in many complex clinical negligence actions. Angela Torrance and Alistair Smith jointly head the practice at Archers Law LLP, supported by three assistant solicitors. A varied workload includes some high-value cerebral palsy cases.

Sunderland-based Ben Hoare Bell's experienced team regularly obtains compensation for clients in a diverse mix of cases, from cerebral palsy as a result of birth injury to plastic surgery, cancer and GP negligence claims.

At Burnetts, Vicki Jagger has a strong reputation for birth trauma cases, while Freemans has three partners specialising in clinical negligence claims, which vary from small sums to claims for more than pounds 5m.

Patrick Rafferty, who heads the clinical negligence team at McKeags, has considerable expertise in advising on high-value brain injury claims. In 2005, the firm concluded litigation against a local trust hospital, recovering significant damages for a claimant who had undergone negligent surgery.
