Clare McKeon Column: Ordeal of mum.

Byline: Clare McKeon

I READ Mary Murphy's full statement which she delivered in court this week.

Three and a half years ago her son Brian was punched and kicked to death.

As I read her court statement I started to cry. It is truly heart-rending.

Her statement points out what she claims are immense flaws in our legal system.

Mary Murphy says that six people had been involved in the attack but only one had been convicted of manslaughter.

Brian Murphy's father claimed that the trial process is not about the truth but about shamelessly avoiding it.

People gave character witnesses for the boys who were on trial.

"Conduct throughout his school career had been consistently excellent, he was never aggressive or used bad language. He was refined."

Another was referred to as "goodness" and another "trustworthy, responsible and very professional, kind, considerate, helpful".

Mary Murphy says: "I cannot contemplate forgive-ness until I know the truth and those responsible for Brian's death have acknowledged their part in it."

The sentences will be delivered tomorrow.
