Byline: By Cara Simpson

COVENTRY Cathedral is expected to be packed for a farewell service for the Bishop of Coventry (left).

The event to celebrate the Rt Rev Colin Bennetts' service to the city will be held on Saturday, December 1, at 3pm - and members of the public are welcome.

Bishop Colin, who is retiring in December, was enthroned in Coventry Cathedral on Palm Sunday in April 1998 after being area bishop of Buckingham from 1994. He was also residentiary canon of Chester Cathedral and diocesan director of ordinands from 1990-1994.

Prior to that he held important ministerial posts in Oxford, at the university and in the city, from 1969-1990 and, after he was ordained in 1965, served his curacy in Tonbridge, Kent.

Commenting on the highlights of his ministry, Bishop Colin said: "There are too many to choose from. I would however have to include the Church Urban Fund celebrations, various visits I have made to Dresden where my German has come in useful, especially the privilege of preaching at the dedication of the Frauenkirche."

He added: "I would highlight that it has been a huge privilege to meet and worship with 'ordinary' parishioners week by week."

Bishop Colin is married to wife Veronica, education director of international stage school Stagecoach, and they have two sons, two daughters, seven grandchildren and an honorary granddaughter.

His career in Coventry has included speaking at debates at the House of Lords on euthanasia, Alzheimer's disease and peace issues.

Tickets for the farewell service will be allocated on a first-come-first-served basis.

They are available from Maureen Prett, Bishop's House, 23 Davenport Road, Coventry, CV5 6PW, or by e-mailing Maureen.Prett@ btconnect.com or by calling 024 7667 2244.
