City pub trashed in rampage; Alarm set off at damaged bar before Cardiff v Bristol game.

Byline: Claire Miller

A CARDIFF pub was forced to close after chairs and tables were turned over and a smoke-bomb was set off before Saturday's match between Cardiff City and Bristol City.

Pictures on Twitter, purporting to have been taken from inside The Great Western Pub in the city centre, showed chairs and tables upended, while a video showing a smoke-bomb being set off in the pub was also posted on YouTube.

The bar, at the end of St Mary Street and near Cardiff Central train station had been used by Bristol City supporters ahead of the game's early kick off.

South Wales Police said there had been a police presence in the area because of the match but said it could not confirm if there had been a specific incident at the pub. Reports of problems at the pub started surfacing on Twitter at around 11.50am, with pictures of the damage starting to circulate later in the day.

A video shows a smoke-bomb being set off in the packed pub, with yellow smoke filling the main room as supporters with pins ts chant and film the scene on mobile phones.

At one point in the video, the supporters sing " we'll do what we want," as the room fills with clouds of smoke. Eventually the smoke sets off the smoke alarm and one fan decides to dance on a table.

At around 2pm, The Great Western said on its Twitter page: "You may have heard about the damage done to our pub, we are piecing things together and clearing up. Will open again soon. We apologise for the inconvenience."

When contacted by the Echo, a manager at the pub declined to clarify exactly what had happened.

The pub later posted at around 7pm that it had re-opened: "We are back in business and the beats are banging with our live Dj and drinks promos. Big love to cardiff on their win today."

A large police presence was later seen on Sloper Road and Penarth Road escorting away fans back to Cardiff Central Station from the match, which Cardiff won 2-1.
