City planners need to be much bolder; Letters.

ABOUT two years ago, when it became clear that the Post Office was definitely moving out of the sorting office, I suggested to John McGuigan, then playing a major role in the re-development strategy for the city, that the area from Hales Street up to and including the Canal basin should be re-developed as a prestige shopping mall.

I suggested there should be entrances on Hales St and Bishop St and a covered bridge linking it with Canal Basin.

At the time he dismissed this option and said that whole area was designated for office type accomodation.

T h a n k f u l l y, something close to my vision seems to be on the cards but, if it is not linked to the Canal Basin by a safe weatherproof means of access, we will have missed an outstanding opportunity to connect an excellent waterside environment with the city centre.

We probably couldn't hope to match the area around the NIA and the Symphony Hall in Birmingham but it would have a very similar 'feel' albeit on a much smaller scale. So come on city planners let's be bold - forget about the 'zebra crossing' idea and take the opportunity to properly incorporate the Canal Basin into the proposals.
