A HUGE well done to two of the City of Birmingham Gymnastics Club's Artistic gymnasts, Oriel Powell and Montana Leith-Mulley, for being recently selected into the England squad.
Great job girls! This is a superb achievement and we would like to add our congratulations to Oriel and Montana for gaining a squad place.
Montana has been selected into the England squad as a first year Espoir finishing tenth in the English Championships in her first year of competition and fourth in the national Quatro Cup at Pipers Vale and finishing in first place at the West Midlands Voluntary Championships.
This was Oriel's first year competing successfully as a Junior, both at the British and English championships.'.
Oriel and Montana attended a three-day England Training Camp at Rushmore Gymnastics Centre, accompanied by Matthew Woolley, City of Birmingham Women's Artistic Coach, who explained there was a real sense of community at the camp with everyone sharing ideas, techniques and learning from one another.
Montana said: "I was a little nervous and very excited to have the opportunity to work with coaches and gymnasts I have watched from afar. I learned a lot over the three days, particularly that you need to be positive and have a positive attitude and work hard so that you can fulfil your potential and succeed.
"The camp really made me realise the importance of a positive mental attitude and it was a brilliant experience. I really enjoyed it."
The girls also had the opportunity to work with choreographer and ex-Great Britain gymnast Danusia Francis in a number of one-to-one sessions looking at the dance elements in their beam and floor routines.
Oriel and Montana particularly enjoyed a series of dance warm-up routines led by Huntingdon Gymnastics Club's Choreographer, Monica Deserlamos.
Gymnastics Development Officer and Head coach to the GMAC Performance Programme, Phil Barrow, was delighted at the girls' selection to the England squad, saying: "I couldn't be more proud of the girls and their respective coaches, who have worked extremely hard to maintain and develop their skills, techniques and aptitudes.
"They have all prepared hard and well for this moment and I would like to congratulate Montana and Oriel on their selection to the England National 2017 Squad."
