City care home set for closure; UPHEAVAL: 37 dementia residents will be moved.

Byline: By Fiona Scott, Political Editor

A CARE home in Coventry is set close in November, it was announced today.

Some 37 people with dementia face being moved to a new home when Newfield House in Kingfield Road, Foleshill, closes.

Families were reassured that they will have a say on where their relatives are moved.

The home, which has been run by Methodist Homes for the Aged since April 2005, is owned by Coventry Primary Care Trust.

The building is deemed to no longer meet modern expectations - such as all rooms having en-suite bathrooms.

All residents are being offered a place at another home run by MHA in Coventry, Abbey Park in Humber Road, Stoke.

Three years ago, before the MHA took it over, a fire ravaged the annexe at Newfield House and 15 residents had to move out.

Now Coventry City Council and MHA are writing to relatives about the expected closure of the home on 1 November this year.

Cllr Hazel Noonan, Cabinet Member (Community Services) said: "Coventry City Council and MHA are deeply conscious of the upheaval that this announcement will cause residents and staff.

"We will do all we can to make the changes as efficiently and sensitively as possible. We remain committed to working together to ensure that we provide the best quality care and accommodation for older people in Coventry."

Abbey Park is a more modern building, where all rooms have en-suite showers. The council said there were enough spare places to take all the Newfield House residents.

MHA will be consulting with staff regarding their employment and will seek to offer alternative posts at either Abbey Park or other MHA homes.
