Police nab suspect after wild car chase

A car theft suspect tried to escape police Monday by ditching his stolen wheels and diving into the Willamette River.

The subsequent emergency response closed one lane of westbound Interstate 105 west of Coburg Road, slowing traffic in both directions between 4 p.m. and 5 p.m., Eugene police said.

Police arrested Brian Doherty, 22, of Springfield on charges of car theft and eluding police. His passenger, Misty Schneider, 21, of Springfield was charged with car theft and was held in the Lane County Jail on several warrants.

Springfield police had been looking for Doherty for several days when an officer saw him at 4:07 p.m. near 42nd and Olympic streets, Springfield Sgt. Mike McCarthy said. Officers chased a car believed to be driven by Doherty through Springfield and into Eugene.

After striking a car on the Washington-Jefferson Bridge in Eugene, Doherty allegedly abandoned the damaged maroon Honda - girlfriend Schneider inside - in the left southbound lane. He ran through traffic, climbed down an embankment and hid in some bushes along the riverbank, McCarthy said.

When police beat the bushes with their batons, Doherty jumped into the river, but later surrendered, McCarthy said.

Emergency vehicles had converged on the area in case the chase turned into a rescue operation. The cluster of police cars and fire apparatus tied up traffic for more than an hour.
