City's narrow lead in juvenile chart; SIRE FOCUS.

CHISWICK BEY'S win in the Brocklesby Stakes, which was worth pounds 12,952 to the winner, not only handed his sire, Elusive City, a flying start to the season, but is also primarily responsible for the stallion's slender advantage over Avonbridge by prize-money.

Chiswick Bey is one of more than 110 two-year-olds from the third crop of Elusive City, who was switched from the Irish National Stud to Haras d'Etreham this year after the emergence of Poule d'Essai des Pouliches heroine Elusive Wave from his first crop.

Second-crop sire Avonbridge sits in second following a sparkling week during which he sired the juvenile winners Temple Meads, w h o w a s s u c c e s s f u l i n a traditionally hot maiden at the Newmarket Guineas meeting, Fifth Ave and Lord Avon.

Despite finishing fifth in last season's leading first-crop sires' list by number of winners, Whitsbury Manor Stud's son of Averti filled only 16th by prize-money. With Temple Meads and Fifth Ave looking as if they can progress to better things, it would be no surprise to see Avonbridge maintain his standing among the leading two-year-olds sires within the near future at least.

Holy Roman Emperor, whose yearling average hit 61,592gns last year, heads the first-crop sires in third, albeit with just one winner, while the next two places are filled by the father and son duo of Acclamation and Royal Applause, both of whom were leading first-crop sires in their time.

Another former leading firstcrop sire, Invincible Spirit, is snapping at their heels with the winners of nearly pounds 24,000 in prize-money. This year's crop of two-year-olds were bred off a fee of EUR35,000 and consequently averaged more than 75,000gns in the sale ring last year.

It may still be early days, but also noteworthy is the fast start made by Pastoral Pursuits, who has sired three winners from four runners.
