Cirrus Logic's New Seismic Measurement Chip Pumps Up Next-Generation Energy-Exploration System Capabilities.

To help meet the increase in worldwide energy demand, Cirrus Logic Inc. (Nasdaq:CRUS) today introduced the newest member of its CS537x family of seismic survey and seismology measurement chips -- the CS5371 -- a single channel delta-sigma modulator.

The CS537x family gives designers the opportunity to improve data resolution up to 10 times and meet the increased channel count requirements of next-generation exploration systems. This enables the identification of potential oil pockets to plus/minus 4 meters, versus the plus/minus 40 meters using today's technology -- while allowing up to a 50 percent reduction in seismic system size. The CS537x family was designed specifically for use in land and ocean-based oil exploration, seismology and high-resolution earthquake monitoring equipment.

The increase in worldwide energy demand has resulted in renewed oil exploration activity. The Oil and Gas Journal forecasts that operators will increase total outlays for drilling and completions in the United States by 36 percent to $32 billion this year.

"Our new chip family gives manufacturers of seismic exploration equipment the flexibility of a multi-channel solution that minimizes size, integrates system peripherals, and cuts power in half while improving measurement performance."

The CS5371, when combined with the CS5372 dual channel delta-sigma modulator and the CS5376 quad channel digital filter, gives exploration equipment manufacturers increased design flexibility to create single and multi-channel seismic applications.

A complete four-channel modulator/digital filter solution can be implemented using only three devices, producing a compact cost-effective, high-resolution measurement system. Multi-channel system support, combined with integrated peripherals and customizable digital filter coefficients, provide for innovation and flexibility in design configuration.

Integrated system peripherals within the CS537X chip family simplify the design of seismic measurement systems by providing user programmable gain and offset correction factors for each channel, digital outputs for a delta-sigma test DAC, 12 general purpose I/O pins, a secondary master mode serial port, a time break controller for data tagging, and a JTAG port for boundary scan testing.

The digital filtering engine within the CS537X chip family is flexible because it can be programmed with custom filter coefficients, permitting system designers to offer optimized digital filters without the need for additional processing using a DSP. Customization lets system designers tailor the digital filters for specific applications while maintaining the key benefits of smaller size and lower power. The CS5376 digital filtering engine supports custom coefficients for linear phase or minimum phase FIR filters and first, second, or third order IIR filters, with a set of general-purpose FIR and IIR coefficients included on-chip for systems where custom digital filters are not required.

Cirrus Logic's new generation of seismic measurement chips provide higher performance, lower power, smaller size, and lower cost per channel compared with its previous generation industry-standard CS5321 delta-sigma modulator and CS5322 digital filter.
