Circus train engine.

Choo Choo! Car #1 in a four-car series, this decked-out circus train engine comes complete with whistle and cowcatcher! Customize it with some gold pinstriping to make your locomotive extra special.

* 1 skein Ultra Pima by Cascade Yarns, 100% mercerized cotton (200 yds/ 10Og) in each of colors 3733 Turquoise (A), 3779 Pansy (B), 3729 Gray (C), 3754 True Black (D), 3728 White (E), and 3747 Gold (F)

* U.S. size 4 (3.5mm) straight needles and set of 5 DPNs, or size required for gauge

* Stitch markers

* Yarn needle

* Polyester fiberfill

PATTERN

Boiler

With DPNs and A, cast on 8 sts. Place marker and join, being careful not to twist the sts.

Rnd 1: [Kfb] 8 times; 16 sts.

Rnd 2: Knit.

Rnd 3: [K1, M1, k1] 8 times; 24 sts.

Rnd 4: Knit.

Rnd 5: [K2, M1, k1] 8 times; 32 sts.

Rnd 6: Knit.

Rnd 7: [K3, M1, k1] 8 times; 40 sts.

Rnd 8: Knit.

Rnd 9: [K4, M1, k1] 8 times; 48 sts.

Rnd 10: Knit.

Rnd 11: Purl.

Engine boiler trim (make 3)

With DPNs and F make a 5-st I-cord 8 1/2" long.

Left engine side

With straight needles and C, cast on 42 sts.

Rows 1-7: Beg with RS row, work in St st.

Row 8: Bind off 22 sts, purl to end; 20 sts.

Change to B.

Rows 9-24: Work in St st.

Row 25: K4, change to E, k12, change to B, k4.

Rows 26-32: Cont in color patt in St st.

Change to B.

Rows 33-34: Work in St st.

Row 35: K1, M1, knit to end; 21 sts.

Row 36: Purl.

Row 37: K1, M1, knit to end; 22 sts. Bind off pwise. Cut yarn, leaving a long tail for sewing.

Right engine side

With straight needles and C, cast on 42 sts.

Rows 1-7: Beg with a WS row, work in St st.

Row 8: Bind off 22 sts, knit to end; 20 sts.

Change to B.

Rows 9-24: Work in St st.

Row 25: P4, change to E, p12, change to B, p4.

Center engine strip

With D and straight needles, loosely cast on 10 sts.

Row 3: [K1, M1] 2 times, k10, [M1, k1] 2 times; 18 sts.

Row 4: Purl.

Row 5: [K1, M1] 3 times, k12, [M1, k1] 3 times; 24 sts.

Row 7: Bind off 1 st, change to B, bind off 1 st, knit to end; 20 sts.

Smokestack

With DPNs and D, cast on 10 sts.

Pm and join, being careful not to twist the sts.

Rnd 1: [Kfb] 10 times; 20 sts.

Rnd 2: Knit.

Rnd 3: [K1, M1, k1] 10 times; 30 sts. Rnd 4: Knit.

Change to A.

Rnds 5-10: Knit.

Rnd 11: [K2, M1, k1] 10 times; 40 sts.

Rnd 12: Purl.

Rnds 13-14: Knit.

Rnd 15: Purl.

Rnds 16-20: Knit.

Rnd 21: [K2, k2tog] 10 times; 30 sts.

Rnd 22: Purl.

Rnd 23: [K4, ssk] 5 times; 25 sts.

Rnd 24: Knit.

Rnd 25: [K3, k2tog] 5 times; 20 sts.

Smokestack trim

With DPNs and F, make a 3-st I-cord 6 1/2" long. With F make a second 3-st I-cord 3" long.

Whistle

With DPNs and F, cast on 10 sts. Pm and join, being careful not to twist the sts.

Rnds 1-9: Knit.

Rnd 10: [K2tog, k1, k2tog] 2 times; 6 sts.

Rnd 11: Knit.

Cut yam. Weave yam through rem 6 sts and stuff. With 2 strands of D threaded on yarn needle, embroider whistle opening detail to upper half of whistle using satin st. With 2 strands of F yarn threaded on yarn needle, embroider 1 long st along top and bottom of whistle opening detail.

Light

With DPNs and E, cast on 10 sts. Pm and join, being careful not to twist the sts.

Rnd 1: Knit.

Rnd 2: [K2, kfb, k2] 2 times; 12 sts.

Rnds 3 and 4: Knit.

Change to F.

Rnds 5-8: Purl.

Rnd 9: [K3, M1, k3] 2 times; 14 sts.

Rnds 10-14: Purl.

Rnd 15: Knit.

Bind off. Cut yarn, leaving a long tail for sewing. Fold F portion up the sides of E section. Close hole in middle of rnd 1 with leftover yarn tail. Stuff E portion of light.

Big wheels (make 2)

With DPNs and D, cast on 8 sts. Pm and join, being careful not to twist the sts.

Rnd 1: [Kfb] 8 times; 16 sts.

Rnd 2: Knit.

Rnd 3: [K1, M1, k1] 8 times; 24 sts.

Rnd 4: Knit.

Rnd 5: [K2, M1, k1] 8 times; 32 sts. Rnd 6: Knit.

Rnd 7: [K3, M1, k1] 8 times; 40 sts. Rnd 8: Knit.

Rnd 9: [K4, M1, k1] 8 times; 48 sts.

Rnd 10: Knit.

Change to C.

Rnd 11: [K5, M1, k1] 8 times; 56 sts.

Rnds 12 and 13: Purl.

Rnds 14-16: Knit.

Rnd 17 and 18: Purl.

Rnd 19: [K5: k2tog] 8 times; 48 sts. Change to D.

Rnd 20: Knit.

Rnd 21: [K4, k2tog] 8 times; 40 sts.

Spokes (make 2)

With DPNs and E, cast on 7 sts. Pm and join, being careful not to twist the sts.

Rnd 1: Knit.

Rnd 2: [Kfb] 7 times; 14 sts.

Rnds 3 and 4: Knit.

Rnd 5: * Cast on 6 sts, bind off 8 sts, si last st from right needle to left needle; rep from * 5 more times, cast on 6 sts, bind off 7 sts.

Cut yarn, leaving a long tail for sewing.

Small wheels (make 4)

With DPNs and D, cast on 8 sts. Pm and join, being careful not to twist the sts.

Rnd 1: [Kfb] 8 times; 16 sts.

Rnd 2: Knit.

Rnd 3: [K1, M1, k1] 8 times; 24 sts.

Rnd 4: Knit.

Rnd 5: [K2, M1, k1] 8 times; 32 sts.

Rnd 6: Knit.

Change to C.

Rnd 7: [K3, M1, k1] 8 times; 40 sts.

Rnds 8 and 9: Purl.

Rnd 10 and 11: Knit.

Cut yarn, draw through rem sts, pull tight, and secure.

Cowcatcher

With straight needles and C, cast on 15 sts.

Rows 1 and 2: Knit.

Row 3: K2, [change to D, p1, change to C, k1] 5 times, change to D, p1, change to C, k2.

Row 4: Working in established color patt, purl to end.

Rows 5 and 6: Rep rows 3 and 4. Row 7: K2, [with D, pfb, change to C, k1] 5 times, change to D, pfb, change to C, k2; 21 sts.

Row 8: Working in established color patt, purl to end.

Rows 9 and 10: Rep rows 7 and 8. Change to C.

Row 11: K1, M1, k19, M1, k1; 23 sts.

Rows 12-14: Knit.

Row 15: Ssk, k19, k2tog; 21 sts.

Rows 16-18: Beg with a purl row, work in St st.

Row 19: Ssk, k4, [ssk] twice, k1, [k2tog] twice, k4, k2tog; 15 sts.

Rows 20-23: Work in St st.

Rows 24-25: Knit.

Bind off pwise. Cut yarn, leaving a long tail for sewing.

Finishing

Weave in ends. Block.

Match up and pin side engine pieces to center engine piece from the front top edge of engine cab, around the bottom, and up the back to the back top edge of engine cab. Stuff engine cab, leaving the roof open. With roof ribbed edges positioned over the left and right sides of cab, match longer roof edges to the black edges at front and back of cab and sew in place. Sew side edges down, adding some more stuffing before closing seam.

Wrap boiler trim around the front, middle, and back edge of boiler and sew in place. Sew open edge of boiler to front wall of cab below the window. Stuff and attach smoke stack to front half of boiler.

Push the black circle down into top of smoke stack to form a "lip." Stuff the "lip" of smoke stack first, then secure the shaping by applying a running stitch between rnds 6 and 22. Stuff base of smoke stack. Attach open end of smoke stack to front half of boiler. Sew smoke stack trim to the upper half and base of smoke stack.

Sew whistle to back half of boiler. Sew light onto front of boiler.

Stuff and sew small wheel centers to the small wheels. Attach two small wheels to engine base below the boiler. Sew center section of spokes to center of big wheel and stuff lightly before finishing seam. Secure spokes in place with a few stitches on each. Sew large wheels on either side of cab and engine base.

Fold row 1 and row 25 of cowcatcher tog with RS facing out. Sew edges tog and lightly stuff before closing seam. Attach smaller end of cow catcher to front of engine base below the boiler.

With yarn needle and F, decorate cab and roof with embroidery stitches such as chain st, lazy daisy, and french knots using photo as a guide.

Attach button to back of engine base below the cab.
