Chubby walks tall in 600 clash with Hero and Pilot.

Byline: Michael Fortune

PRECONCEIVED notions that Heavenly Hero and Borna Pilot might dominate the Ladbrokes Open 600 were well and truly quashed at Shelbourne on Saturday when the two stars were turned over by younger rival Tall Chubby in a hugely exciting third quarter-final, writes .

There were no excuses on the night either as John Gutteridge's Tall Chubby effectively outpaced the two favourites to the bend, built up a good advantage and then held off the strong late finishers in a real thriller.

Heavenly Hero challenged down the back while Borna Pilot made ground in behind. But the Frances O'Donnell-trained Tall Chubby wa not conceding easily and he held off the strong late run of Borna Pilot by a head in 32.80sec, while it was a length to Heavenly Hero in third.

Best time of the round was the 32.79sec from Sandra Raleigh's Topofthebest in the second heat. Here Ashcarne Blackie led up narrowly from Sandton Chateau, with Topofthebest a menacing third.

By halfway the Fraser Black-trained Topofthebest was in front and from here his power proved too much for his rivals as he pulled away to win by five lengths from Sandton Chateau. Charlie Bird was a surprise casualty here, failing to quicken in his usual manner and coming in fourth.

There was another exciting finish to the final heat where the Tommy Fagan-trained Diego Glory just held off the flying runs of Crossleigh Lark and Moving Customer in 32.99sec. The medium of strong late support, Diego Glory grabbed the lead from Synone Starlight at the first bend and then held off the two finishers by half a length and three parts of a length.

Bold Mossy was an absentee from the opening heat, having incurred a toe injury in the first round. In his absence the Paul Hennessy-trained Govenor became a hot favourite and he duly obliged, but after quite a battle.

The unconsidered Neils Fiddler cut out quite a gallop and didn't give in easily, it was only close home that Govenor forged ahead to win by a length in 33.17sec.

Draw for the semi-finals will be made this morning. However, Ladbrokes issued their betting on the competition yesterday and they make Heavenly Hero and Borna Pilot the 5-2 favourites.
