OUR website users have been discussing court sentences after John Johnson was given a community order following an attack on a policeman:

COULD it simply be that magistrates have actually 'lost the plot' when it comes to sentencing anyone for assault? Our police officers have a very difficult time dealing with a variety of situations and they often receive little or no support from the public. And now the court - which we are expected to respect - has slapped the police in the face with such a stupid sentence

Pheo.

THESE days people are getting away with murder, literally. I respect the police and it's disgusting how officers get treated.

The good men and women of our police forces must feel so run down by this sort of thing.

THIS is one of those subjects that makes my blood boil. There are those out there, including on this forum, who have had a speeding ticket or had a telling off from the cops and think it's a licence to attack them.

Well, if you dial 999 these folk run towards danger, not away from it like everybody else.

For this man to be fined pounds 100 and not jailed when on bail for assaulting another officer is an absolute disgrace.

There should be a mandatory six-month sentence for assaulting a police officer.
